I wonder if others don't like it, because it's an "older" book and it's about a classically musical family? I am putting a hold on it because it's about a classical music family.

This is one of my favourite books and yet when I recommend it to friends they don't like it. I guess that makes it a polarizing read. The characters are very well drawn and complex and the author leaves you as the reader to make your mind up about them. For my part, I loved the way that it evokes genteel poverty, family in the midst of great challenges, and a commitment to excellence.
