This novel is based on the life of the author's "mother, Christy, who at 19 in 1912 joined an interdenominational mission in Cutter Gap, Ky. The transition from a genteel home to rugged life in the Kentucky backwoods is major, but Christy meets it with courage and enthusiasm. In her first year of teaching in a makeshift school she learns much about herself, and even more about the feuding, primitive, clannish folk she ministers to." Pub W.

This was a deeply moving novel about a young woman, Christy, who goes to teach in the Great Smoky Mountains at the turn of the century. As she struggles to understand the highlanders and their ways, she learns about God, life, and love. I was afraid the story would be cloyingly sweet or somehow Pollyanna-ish, but it manages to be compassionate and understanding while still raising the difficult questions we all ask at some point or another.

This is such a touching and inspirational book. Christy survives so many hardships and each conflict keeps you captivated. The characters are all given such a personality that they feel real. Catherine Marshall is an excellent author.
