As far as I can tell the historical aspect is done very well. A good portrayal of life in the empire in politics and war (accurate equipment, training, and tactics). The story isn't a bad one either, the main character is believable, most of the characters are. What they aren't, is fleshed out and filled in. The interactions as well are just slightly off. It felt like a journeyman carpenter's work where the joints are cut well, but they don't quite fit each other. Worth reading but definitely a work by an inexperienced writer. I'm hoping his work improves in the rest of the series.
