After reading eleven chapters, it occurred to me that the author's style of writing reminded me of someone else who did a much better job of creating a picture in the reader's mind. Finally, in chapter 12, Steinbeck gives the answer -- Robert Louis Stephenson, who did a much better job of immersing the reader into a story a generation before with Travels with a Donkey. Back to Steinbeck... the DVD of Cannery Row is much better than the book. Nick Nolte and Deborah Winger along with the supporting cast made the story something worthwhile.
