Good character development, interesting setting, but every time the plot is in danger of moving forward the author tosses in a flashback to bring it to a screeching halt. The flashbacks worked during the first 50 pages, but KJ Parker's addicted and had to have another hit whenever his characters and events threatened to force something to happen in his NOW, wham, another meaningless flashback. I lost patience at page 197. Thumbs down.
